Vintage 2022 – an all-round success

Conditions in September 2022, right at the beginning of harvest, seemed relatively favourable for the Kamptal vintners: with the exception of a dry first quarter, our region had been spoiled with well-distributed rainfalls as well as many sunny hours.

Our vineyards were looking healthy and still full of vitality. There had hardly been any frost, and we only had suffered minor hail damage on Käferberg and Lamm, which happened early in summer and thus reduced the quantity but not the quality of the grapes. Ripeness was about a week ahead of 2021 but did still start a good deal later than in warm years such as 2017, ´18 and ´19.

The changeable weather during the first half of harvest was demanding tactical reactivity.

Program changes were becoming quite common then: impressive cloud formations, which, pushed by fresh north-westerly winds, were chasing over the Kamptal and sometimes ‘leaked’. For us this meant quite erratic, if only temporary, rain showers. On several occasions we had to abruptly stop picking at one place and skip over to another momentarily dry vineyard. Debriefings in the early morning aimed at flexibility and were taking longer as we tried to keep many options open.

Much to our relief, some warm and sunny weeks with mainly very cool nights followed, a real treat for growers who had been waiting patiently for more character in their best Grüners. These weeks finally secured the vintage. On the 25th of October, right before Austria’s national holiday, we finished harvest 2022.

Overall, we are quite happy with the result. Our first young and truly charming wines show great balance. They are fresh, though a little milder than those of 2021, and we can guarantee true drinking pleasure! Our Rieslings already impress in this early state with freshness and deep, sappy fruit. A huge thanks to everyone in our vineyard and cellar team turning vintage 2022 into an “all-round success”!

From the team

Moritz Pleifer – Welcome to the Team!

We have the pleasure to introduce you to the newest member of the Bründlmayer Team, Moritz Pleifer.

Moritz Pleifer

Moritz initially attracted our attention on the occasion of the „Tour de Vin“„Tour de Vin“, where he had helped us out serving the customers. At the age of 23 he was then working successfully at the Strass-regional wine shop ‘Weinkontraste’. He also was just developing his passion for Kamptal wines, falling for their fragility, finesse and balanced structure. We were impressed by his professionalism, quick thinking, great willingness to learn and the particularly charming attitude in dealing with our visitors.

Moritz stems from Hollabrunn, Lower Austria. Right after his 5 years of tourism school in Retz (HLT) he went to Vienna where he made a Bsc. in ‘tourisme and food technology’. In 2022 he also passed his Sommelier Diploma – Congrats!

During harvest Moritz has enjoyed an intense Bründlmayer- trainee program, both in the vineyards and in the cellar. He now is assisting Thomas with sales & marketing and as of 2023 will strengthen the presence of Weingut Bründlmayer on the Austrian and German market.

Our people have already taken you into their hearts - all the best Moritz!

Press reviews vintage 2020

Riesling Heiligenstein, Grüner Veltliner Lamm and Chardonnay Steinberg

Gault&Millau just published the Austrian Wine Guide 2023 evaluating its best wines of vintage 2020 and 2021. Bründlmayer Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Alte Reben 2020 2020 has been ranked on top of the Reisling list with of 19,5/20 points. This is even more remarkable as, in the public mind, 2020 stands in the shadow of 2021. Only two wines of the top ten Rieslings are of vintage 2020. Our follow up vintage will only be released in late Spring 2023. Also, with regards to the outstanding performance of the 2020, we expect a rising demand. ‘Zöbinger Heiligenstein’ has long since become a regular in the hit-parades of the wine-press.

"This is a state-of-the art Riesling: Bründlmayer's Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein Alte Reben (…2020…) is the epitome of an elegant Riesling. Striking with plenty of the finest fruit and a minerality, leading to pure salinity; a firm and vibrant acidity, fascinating tension and great potential make it simply complete."

(Gault&Millau Weinguide Austria 2023, p. 100)(translated from German, quoted freely)

Willi Bründlmayer had his first big international success as a young vintner with Chardonnay. Leading the Gault&Millau list of Austria’s top Burgundy varietal wines today shows once again the estates impressive continuity as a “Beacon of Austrian Wine” (J. Robinson, FT).

The impressive performance of our 2020-ies is completed by the legendary “Grüner Veltliner Ried Kammerner Lamm” its 2020 version landing in the middle of the current Gault&Millau top ten Grüner hit list.
