Weingut Bründlmayer, Langenlois wins VINUM* ‘Village’ Tasting!
Village wines within the Austrian pyramid of origin are making a name for themselves: ‘At their best, ‘Ortsweine’ tell the story of how a place tastes: distinctive, typical, but not uniform,’ says editor-in-chief Harald Scholl in his latest article on the tasting of nearly 150 Austrian ‘village’ wines. Willi Bründlmayer's Langenloiser Alte Reben Grüner Veltliner 2023 Kamptal DAC (95/100 P) won by a wide margin. His 2023 vintage has already confidently brought home the trophy for ‘best Kamptal village’ wine at Falstaff tastings in two consecutive years, scoring 94/100 points each time.
Tasting notes from Falstaff and Vinum:
Medium yellow-green with silver reflections. Fresh apricot, a hint of yellow apple, some mango, candied orange zest, blossom honey. Juicy, powerful, white pome fruit, fresh structure, mineral-salty finish, yellow fruit on the finish, elegant and lingering, a complex food companion with ageing potential (Falstaff, Peter Moster, tasted on 23 May 2025).
Complex nose, hardly any fruit, some wood, salted lemon, star fruit, distinct spice, also reductive notes, definitely needs air. Powerful and polished on the tongue, noticeable spice, salt on the edge of the tongue, clings to the gums, pure structure. Still feels tense, definitely needs time. Vehemently transcends the “Ortswein” (village Wine) framework (VINUM June 2025, Nicole Hareisser, Harald Scholl).
