Wine Diary
Using the rain break
The last week of summer really helped us with the harvest. We have picked almost all the early varieties, our white and red Burgundies, and the grapes for light Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt Rosé.
The first barrels of Steinberg Chardonnay are already bubbling merrily in the maturation cellar. Music to the ears of a winemaker!
Our readers delivered perfectly selected and wonderfully ripe Pinot Noir from the Käferberg and Dechant vineyards. We owe this to the intensive care of the vineyards throughout the year and the repeated restriction of yields, including grape trimming*.
A few cool, windy rainy days are shifting the focus of our work from the vineyard and the press house to the cellar, where we are accompanying the musts and later young wines through the first stage of maturation, while we can optimally prepare for the next intensive harvest phase.
As soon as it dries up again, we want to tackle the early Riesling vineyards. The “Erste Lagen” vineyards planted with Grüner Veltliner look wonderful and are allowed to ripen a little more. We hope for cool but dry, windy, and relatively sunny days starting tomorrow.
