Ried Käferberg

Grüner Veltliner

2023

1ÖTW Erste Lage Kamptal DAC

Very fresh with a subtle but nonetheless mind-blowing varietal bouquet, showing hints of hay-flowers, yeast and fresh cuts of pome fruit, then quince jelly, citrus peel, aniseed and some ginger spice; super fresh & dry, medium-bodied, balanced and densely woven, with a fine-grained texture. Hints of fruit (see above) clinging to some fine phenols still to develop, very agile and persistent, with an enormous ageing potential.

The soil here differs from that of all other sites in the region. At the 300 metre level, preserved calcareous, clayey marine deposits are found. This soil is similar to that of the famous Château Petrus in Pomerol, and produces an extremely dense wine, although it is difficult to work with. The elevation contributes good acidity structure also in warm vintages and late harvests.

The 2023 vintage
Charm, abundance, structure and depth already in the entry level The year had started rather late for our vines. Sprouting was delayed by cool and dry weather, in April. By coincidence, this happily prevented damage by a cold northern air stream, which heavily affected early flowering fruits like apricots. In Kamptal we received the long sought after rain in mid-April and for 2023 this also meant the end of drought. At first, the green cover was flourishing and later, still in May, the slightly late yet vital sprouting took place. Around the 10th of June, under changeable weather conditions, our vineyards started to blossom, about at...

Maturation

This wine is usually fermented in used (2 - 3 years old) 300 liter Austrian oak barrels. For further maturation, it is racked into 2.500 l casks (also 2 - 3 years old).

Food pairing recommendation

Exotic dishes like curry and stir-fried dishes; typical Austrian dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, and roasted goose, duck or pork; goose or duck liver with vegetables and fruit; calf’s liver with apples and onions etc.
