Reserve

Deep carmine garnet with violet reflections, broader rim brightening. Preserved sweet cherries, delicate notes of blackberry jam, a hint of orange zest. Juicy and elegant on the palate, red cherries, fine tannins, good freshness, mineral and with good length.

Falstaff Wine Guide 2025/26

Zweigelt, a cross between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, is highly valued today from Styria up to the Weinviertel and also has a prominent home in the Kamptal. A few years ago, Willi Bründlmayer acquired the cellar, along with some vineyards formerly owned by the Zweigelt family. Alongside Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, it forms the third pillar of red wine production in our house.

The crisp Kamptal Zweigelt, after a slightly longer maturation, reveals a fresh elegance and spiciness that make it unique within the Austrian Zweigelt family.

The 2020 vintage
At the beginning of November, a long-lasting harvest 2020 has found its happy ending! If one would have to headline our experiences with the whole (wine)year 2020 in one word, “Suspense” might be the accurate term, as to us it was an incredibly thrilling and labour-intensive one: a rather dry and warm Winter was followed by Spring virtually without precipitation and with strong temperature fluctuations delaying bud break. These circumstances proved to be lucky, as it prevented us from considerably early frost damage. Only in the middle of May did we receive noteworthy amounts of rain, which allowed the plants to quickly recover and...

Maturation

Only hand picked ripe and healthy grapes were used. The must was fermented in the classic way - two weeks on the skins - while malolactic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled rooms. The aging takes place mainly in barriques and in used barrels made of Austrian oak (Manhartsberg, Ernstbrunnerwald).

Food pairing recommendation

Pairs ideally with pasta and light game dishes; lightly chilled in summer, it’s perfect for barbecues. It also works well as an alternative with fish dishes and (gratinated) vegetable dishes.
