Wine Diary

An early year!

March 15, 2024

The very mild pre-spring weather and good water supply have awakened the vegetation in the Kamptal early from its slumber. The Impressionists would delight in our wine landscape: Many apricot trees are already in full bloom, enriching the first greenery between the rows of vines with delicate pink hues. Buds are swelling on the vines, indicating an early bud-break is to be expected here too.

We have now finished pruning the vines. Currently, we are also busy with "tying": bending the vertically standing fruit canes towards the wire and securing them with bands, so they take on the shape of an arch. This way, the young shoots, pushing vertically towards the sun, are optimally distributed in space and receive enough light and air to thrive. Before this happens, we still have a lot of work to do. Much of it involves maintaining the vineyards, the paths, retaining walls, and soil cultivation.

Some cut surfaces already glisten with moisture. The grapevines are active! However, we still welcome cooler nights, as they delay budding. The earlier the young shoots emerge, the longer and more intense they are exposed to the risk of possible late frosts.

Just in time for Easter, our fruity-fresh Zweigelt Rosé 2023 has reached its cellar maturity! Together with noble Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Kamptal terraces, it will herald the beginning of our wine spring!
