Wine Diary

Sparkling base wine & some fine grape juice

September 22, 2014

This week we will complete our harvest for Sparkling base wines. For Sekt we prefer grapes with moderate sugar – translating into lower alcohol in the wine. They should taste light, fresh, clean, crisp, and even slightly green. The weather continues to remind us of the Champagne region. With this in mind, we might speak of an outstanding Sekt 2014 vintage.

Due to sunny days after the September rain, sugar levels are rising quickly, and assuming that this weather lasts, we will soon bring in the grapes of our young Grüner Veltliner vineyards. Early harvest of young vines strengthens them, as it leaves the energy of the remaining sunny autumn days to the plant and helps to build reserves in the roots and stems.

We also just began to produce our first naturally cloudy grape juice of Grüner Veltliner and - provided that the weather holds – also of Zweigelt and Syrah grapes, which have a fine and wonderfully fruity red grape juice.
