Wine Diary

Golden Final

October 29, 2021

Heiligenstein, Lamm, Käferberg & Co

Only a few growers had waited with the harvest of their top sites. They have been rewarded as the weather over these past weeks couldn’t have played along better! While during the day splendid sunshine favoured ripeness, a series of very crisp nights with temperatures around the freezing point added the desired aromatic complexity to the grapes. So we set out for the great harvest finale under perfect conditions with a once more energized and dedicated team.

After three intensive days on the “Zöbinger Heiligenstein” we went over to “Lamm” and then further on to “Käferberg”. Thanks to a truly careful yield management (also bunch dividing) the grapes of these wonderful sites tasted perfectly balanced and put a smile on many righteously tired faces.

Over the whole golden Autumn week a smaller team was harvesting Grüner grapes for our highly treasured “Ortswein” (village wine) in various first growth vineyards around Langenlois. Weeks ago, some of these sites had seen a first round of picking. Only one bunch per shoot had been left for further maturing and the risk has paid off: the juices of those grapes show an even more genuine varietal character, lots of spice and the finest fruit aromas.

Nearing the end of harvest we are confident: vintage 2021 will bring great joy to wine lovers!
