Wine Diary
Sunshine’s back, nights are cool!
After the rain break, the sun is back shining brightly over the Kamptal! Precipitation was expected and coincidentally gave as a little time to rest over the weekend. In general, soils had been very dry and could easily absorb those 30 mm of rain. Strong westerly winds also helped to quickly dry off the vines. We were able to start again by noon on Monday, and our harvest has been progressing rapidly ever since. Burgundy varietals on sensitive sites have now passed through the preliminary picking process. Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris and surprisingly fruity Zweigelt came in with still ideal levels for Sekt base wine, as well as the first fruity, spicy Grüner grapes. Those might already be suitable for our “Leicht & Trocken 2019”, our lightest dry Grüner Veltliner bottling. If everything goes well, we will have finished harvesting for Sekt by this evening.
We are particularly pleased about the first very cool nights! Yesterday temperatures went down below 7° C, while during the day, the air was warming up to around 20° C. Whenever we taste the grapes now, we immediately feel their aromatic progress. These are truly ideal harvest conditions, and so everybody is in a good mood.
