Wine Diary
Interim Spurt before the rain!
It's good to already have wonderful grapes from many of the most important vineyards in the cellar after the first two weeks of September! The incredibly early year made this possible. The middle of the week marked the provisional climax of an intensive but so far very pleasing main harvest! With the change in the weather in mind, we gathered all our strength once again. A cool, wet phase would then provide the necessary recovery.
Vogelsang and Heiligenstein
The task was to pick all the Grüner Veltliner from the ‘Berg-Vogelsang’. This site is located on the stony south-western flank of the Ried Loiserberg high in the west of Langenlois, about 5 km as the crow flies from the second main site of the day, the Zöbinger Heiligenstein vineyard, where we wanted to pick all the grapes from the younger to medium-aged vineyards. These were already pleasantly ripe and still perfectly healthy. They will produce the fresher, somewhat lighter parts of the expected great “Erste Lage” wine, while an equally important part, especially in the older vineyards, will be allowed to weather the coming cool, wet and windy phase in order to contribute a ripeness and complexity later on. We also received a steady supply of classic Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal terraces.
Tired but satisfied faces can be seen today. The break due to the weather drop has come just at the right time to recharge our batteries! In the meantime, the cards are being reshuffled. Cool temperatures and the wind make us confident that we will 'dive through' despite the expected rainfall.
