Wine Diary
Lots of good things and a little “Lamm” for the soul!
Taking advantage of the ripeness boost of the past few days and with a change of the weather in sight, we put all our energy into the harvest.
We brought in a large part of the Chardonnay from Ried Steinberg in perfect condition on Saturday. The gently pressed must was allowed to settle a little before being filled into new 300 liter oak barrels.
The famous Ried Lamm vineyard was also a special case this year, with very few but all the more delicate grapes due to late frosts. After a picture-book Sunday morning harvest, we received just 1500 kg of strictly selected grapes. But every kilo of these Lamm fruit is balm for the winemaker's soul! This also applies to the green-golden Veltliner grapes from the Spiegel vineyard, which made their way to the wine press in small 25 kilo crates in pleasing abundance and tasted full-bodied, delicately spicy and sparkling clean.
After a well-deserved break, we will turn our attention to the cooler and stonier vineyards. Fresh Grüner Veltliner from Berg Vogelsang and also the first Riesling grapes from the famous Heiligenstein vineyard should be picked this week, before a cool and very wet phase is announced towards the next weekend, which could provide a longer breather.
