A welcome cool-down!
A light drizzle and moderate temperatures are giving us a chance to breathe a sigh of relief! The dry ground is immediately soaking up the few litres of rainfall. We can carry on harvesting undisturbed.
Our Pinot Noir from the Käferberg and Dechant vineyards, Chardonnay from Steinberg and all the other Burgundy varieties are already in the cellar. There may also be a little St Laurent red wine again after 2022, now that this highly aromatic but difficult-to-cultivate local grape variety has been used exclusively for sparkling wine base wine in recent years. However, the grapes earmarked for this are still waiting in the Steinberg vineyard for the optimal time to be harvested.
Alongside Zweigelt for rosé and a few specialities such as Muskateller, Cabernet or Merlot, the focus is increasingly on the renowned ‘Erste Lagen’ (Premier Cru) vineyards: Riesling awaits at Steinmassl and Heiligenstein; Grüner Veltliner in the Loiserberg, Käferberg, Spiegel and Lamm vineyards. Each plot must be optimally scheduled into the harvest workers’ timetable, depending on the weather and the progress of the harvest.
Even though the change in weather is unlikely to have much impact on the expected yields, it does give us a little more time to bring them in safely.
