Wine Diary
Véraison
August 7, 2020
The term visibly stems from France and signifies the actual ripening period of the grape which is slowly but surely happening in our vineyards.
The berries have by now reached about half of their final size and continue swelling. They are taking in sugar and juice while acidity is slowly going down. The green in the white varietals is getting lighter, the red grapes become darker and the latter process is easily noticed. Time of véraison tells us pretty well when we might expect the start of harvest. We will allow us a short vacation. However, everybody will have to be ready beginning of September, for the hardest and thrilling but also most beautiful time of a vintner’s year!
